Restorative Yoga, Pranayama, and Healing Sound

The restorative classes I offer are designed to bring balance to the nervous system—shifting us from the heightened state of “fight or flight” governed by the sympathetic nervous system, into the calming “rest and digest” mode of the parasympathetic nervous system.

These sessions provide a much-needed pause from the fast-paced, often overwhelming tempo of modern life.

Healing sound is an integral part of the experience. I incorporate both recorded tracks and live elements, including shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) and singing bowls, to deepen the sense of relaxation and inner stillness.

Each session begins with pranayama (breathing exercises) to help us arrive fully in the space and prepare for the restorative work ahead. The postures, all performed on the ground using supportive props, are held gently for 2 to 5 minutes. These stretches are intended to be nurturing, with absolutely no pain or strain.

Modifications are always provided to meet each individual’s needs. The goal is to allow as much of the body as possible to be supported by the props and the floor, creating a sense of grounding and ease.

We conclude every class with a long Savasana, starting with a brief, guided body scan meditation to help integrate the practice and allow for deep rest.

Just as our bodies need recovery time between vigorous workouts, restorative yoga provides essential physical and mental restoration. No matter where you are on your yoga journey, this gentle practice offers a valuable way to reconnect, recharge, and heal.

Coko Brown

A native of California, Coko was born and raised in San Diego. Her yoga journey began over 35 years ago with Iyengar Yoga. Guided for decades by a dedicated teacher and mentor, Coko now aspires to pass on that same spirit of guidance and support in her own teaching. Her passion for Restorative Yoga blossomed during her time at a studio in Carlsbad, California, where the practice proved to be life-changing.

Today, she is devoted to sharing the deeply personal and transformative benefits of Restorative Yoga with others. In addition to being a yoga teacher, Coko is also a visual artist and musician. She incorporates her music into her sessions, using singing bowls and shakuhachi flutes to create a calming atmosphere that supports deep relaxation and healing.
